Most of the articles on these WebPages have been written by godly men with a central belief in the Lord Jesus Christ. However as with most of us, they may have different beliefs concerning some particular doctrines. These articles have been made available for the purpose of “gleaning the good” where good can be found. I do not necessarily endorse all that is written by others, anymore than I expect others to endorse all that I write.

Morning Thoughts by Elder Philip Conley

Psalm 97:2, "Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne."

This morning, many talk of the God of love and light. The Bible indeed speaks of God being love and the Light that no man can approach unto. We are also told that there is no darkness in Him at all.  However, if that is the only thing talked about, then we are being negligent of preaching all the counsel of God. It is the duty of the LORD's ministers to preach about many different subjects (all focused on Christ) to give the complete spectrum of the teachings in the Bible. Does that mean that we know everything within the spectrum? I do not, but we should try to preach all that the LORD blesses to reveal to us and not stay on one subject continually.

Here, the LORD is talked about in terms of darkness and clouds. While there is no darkness "in" Him (I John 1:5), this verse talks of darkness "around" Him. He works many times in the Bible in darkness. He appeared to the children of Israel in the mount of Sinai in a dark cloud, and many times this was for their protection.  He told Moses that he could not see the Lord's face and live. He works in darkness sometimes for our protection. He works at other times in darkness to bring judgment (as is the case in this verse from the context). His judgments are righteous, but they are done bringing much wailing and gnashing of teeth.  When the Lord's judgments come, it is not a pleasant time, but it is ALWAYS needful. Many times, we think we know the time that it is needful, but the LORD never judges too quickly or too slowly. He always
judges at the right and appointed time.

Finally, the LORD works in darkness from the standpoint of revelation. He reveals things to whomsoever He pleases. He tells us in Isaiah 45:3 that the things He reveals are treasures of darkness. That means that His ways are treasures, but they are not known to all.  Many times, He reveals things to certain members of a natural family, but others are left in the "dark" about it. Most of my natural relations know nothing of the riches of Christ as taught in the Bible. They are ignorant of God's grace, mercy, and love. Is that because they have never heard about it? My dad talked with them many times through multiple discussions, but as of yet, the LORD has not seen fit to reveal those things to them. So, in the person of God, there is no darkness, but there is darkness in His works. For, the LORD declared plainly that He was the One that created the darkness in the first place. May we ever be thankful to Him for revealing some things to us so that we may be partakers of those treasures He has left for us here below.

In Hope,

Bro Philip
